District Five Leads Midlands in SAT Scores and State in SAT Participation

Submitted by Lexington-Richland 5

Lexington-Richland School District Five leads the state in the percentage of students who took the SAT examination and has the third highest composite scores among all districts in South Carolina.

Eighty-two percent of District Five’s Classes of 2013 took the SAT, compared to 51 percent statewide, according to new data released Sept. 26. The district’s composite score was 1,517, higher than both state and national averages for public schools of 1,423 and 1,474 respectively.

District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “I am so proud of our students, teachers and all the parents and others who support our students.  These results are truly a team effort.  Being the state leader in SAT participation demonstrates our strong belief that all students must be ready for success in a career or college.”

The new report shows that 941 students in District Five’s Classes of 2013 attempted the SAT at least once. These students achieved an average score of 508 on the critical reading section, 522 on the math section and 486 on the writing section. District Five students beat statewide averages by more than twenty points on all sections of the test. Statewide averages for all students including public, private and homeschools were 484 for the critical reading section, 487 for the math section, and 465 for the writing section.

“District Five’s scores are exceptional, and we must continue to improve as we test more and more students each year. That’s the challenge,” said Dr. Christina Melton, District Five’s Chief Instructional Officer. “Our goal is to help our students excel in and beyond K-12, and a continued focus on academic rigor and cutting-edge teaching methods will help us accomplish this today and well into the future.”

The new report on District Five SAT scores mirror other predictors for how well the district is preparing students for college. Data released in August showed that District Five’s Classes of 2013 had an ACT average composite score of 22.1, which is 1.7 points above the state average of 20.4 and 1.2 points above the national average of 20.9. The district had the third highest composite ACT score in the state. Last week, eleven students from District Five were named semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.
