State legislatures get very political, and then want to legislate things like creationism (intelligent design) or ban the science behind evolution. Political hacks should not be determining the school curriculum, they are not actually the most knowledgeable people with respect to academics. They are politicians; that does not make them experts on anything in particular except winning elections.
