What I don't think is a good thing, is having state legislators passing bills on this level of detail. State legislatures get very political, and then want to legislate things like creationism (intelligent design) or ban the science behind evolution. Political hacks should not be determining the school curriculum, they are not actually the most knowledgeable people with respect to academics. They are politicians; that does not make them experts on anything in particular except winning elections.

The Chavez holiday coincided with Easter, but I suspect that those who are complaining would have found another reason to criticize Google if the Chavez birthday had fallen on a day other than Easter and the company had run the doodle.

The legislature is in the business of making laws. There are expenses in that business. In my perfect world, there wouldn't be a legislature, but in this world there is and they need to have expert input into their process or else they will just be flying blind, and we've seen how badly that turns out.
