Irmo Defeats South Pointe, 4-0

The Yellow Jackets will face Mauldin in the second round Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Irmo High School advances to the second round of Class 4A boys soccer playoffs after a 4-0 win over South Pointe High Tuesday. 

The Yellow Jackets dominated the game from the beginning. Ben Hinson scored the first point within the first minute of taking the field. Other scorers include Preston Graczyk, Weston Garner and Edwin Garcia.

The Yellow Jackets will face Mauldin in the second round Thursday night at 7 p.m. at home.

Prior to the start of the game, the Irmo community recognized Coach Phil Savitz for his many accomplishments at the school.

Savitz is coaching his last season with the Yellow Jackets. He will begin coaching duties at Lexington School District 1's new River Bluff High School next school year.

On hand for the celebration of 33 years of service were Lexington-Richland 5 board members, Irmo soccer alumni and Rep. Nathan Ballentine, R-Richland, and Rep. Chip Huggins, R-Lexington.

District 5 board chairman Robert Gantt presented a copy of the design for the high school's new field house which will be named after Savitz.

Reps. Ballentine and Huggins presented Savitz with the order of the Silver Crescent.

During Savitz's career, he has led the Yellow Jackets to 13 state championships. He became the 17th coach in the nation in March 2012 to get more than 600 wins.

Savitz was inducted into the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011 and was named the Region Coach of the Year 17 times.
