Reports: Teen Drowns in Lake Murray

The 17-year-old's body was recovered from the water Sunday afternoon in Saluda County.

A 17-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon in a suspected drowning in Lake Murray, according to reports. 

The Saluda County Coroner identified the teen as Millard Waeland Peeples, according to a report from WIS.

The incident happened in Saluda County when four teens on a pontoon boat were coming back to the public boat landing on Riverbend Point, according to WIS. Two of the teens decided to jump out of the boat and swim to shore.

The two boys ran into trouble and started calling for help, according to WIS. One of them caught a lifejacket from a woman whose boat was tied at the dock, but was unable to help his friend. 

Rescue teams in Saluda, Newberry and Union counties and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources got the call around 4:45 p.m., according to WLTX. Rescue divers arrived around 5:30 p.m. and recovered the boy's body about 15 minutes later.
