Lexington-Richland 5 reviews school facility plans in the district, approves several projects.
The Lexington-Richland 5 board on Monday approved proceeding with the first phase of projects at Irmo and Dutch Fork high schools with a total budget of $4.8 million. Six board members voted to approve the plans that district officials say will address traffic and parking, create a new student drop off route and redefine entry points onto campus. Board member Kim Murphy voted against the motion to approve the plans. Murphy, who said she wasn't against the projects, had concerns about the budget and wanted more time to discuss the plans. Phase I plans at Irmo are budgeted for $1,450,000 while Dutch Fork's budget is $3,350,000. A copy of the proposed plan can be viewed on the right. Hundreds joined faculty and staff of Seven Oaks and Leaphart elementary schools to celebrate the new additions and renovations
Lexington-Richland 5 held two ribbon cutting ceremonies Friday morning to showcase the newly renovated Seven Oaks and Leaphart elementary schools. The renovations were a part of a bond referendum that voters passed in 2008 for the district to renovate seven schools and construct three new schools. At Seven Oaks, a new kindergarten wing was constructed and the administrative office got a new facelift among other renovations. Those who attended Leaphart's ceremony was able to see the school's new office area, computer lab, media center, theatre, cafeteria and gym. Both ceremonies included musical performances by students. Over three years ago. The students who were freshman at the time of the bonds approval are graduating this year. Sadly, they will not enjoy the improvements that they and their parents fought for.
