Update: Irmo Man Killed in Single-Car Collision

The fatal collision is still being investigated.

Update, 3:32 p.m.: Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has identified the driver killed in a single-car collision that happened on Kennerly Road Thursday morning. Shane A. Deeds, of Irmo, was driving a Lexus sedan north on Kennerly Road when it ran off the road and hit a tree. Deeds, who was to turn 34 Saturday, was wearing a seatbelt. Deeds died at the scene, according to a release. An autopsy report shows Deeds died from the injuries sustained in the collision. The S.C. Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.   Original story: The S.C. Arrest Made in Fatal Lexington Crash

Man charged in horrific September collision that killed Tripp Weed was under the influence of synthetic marijuana, authorities say

Lexington Police on Monday arrested James Furman Prescott, 32, of Lexington, more than six weeks after Prescott hit another car head-on along West Main Street, killing 37-year-old Brady Davis "Tripp" Weed III, and injuring Weed's nine-year-old son, Drew. Police said Prescott has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death, and reckless homicide for Weed's death, which occurred Sept. 13. Police also said Prescott has been charged with felony DUI resulting in great bodily harm, due to injuries received by Weed's son.  Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said that lab results indicated Prescott had synthetic marijuana in his system at the time of the collision. Driver charged with felony DUI in fatal crash that killed 7-year-old boy

Update at 10:30 Nov. 1:The Lexington County Coroner's Office reports 10-year-old Haley Upchurch has died. Original story: The 10-year-old sister of a young boy killed in a Friday night crash in Lexington County remains in critical condition at an area hospital, according to this report from WIS-TV. Meanwhile, Robert Craft, 37, of Pelion, has been charged with felony DUI involving death, felony DUI involving great bodily injury, and having an open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle, according to a Lexington County Sheriff’s Department booking report. Man Found Shot, Dead at Home in Lexington County

Lexington County Sheriff's Department seeking public's help in homicide

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies are investigating the death of a man that had been shot and killed in his home near Chapin on Friday. About 12:15 p.m. deputies arrived to a home at 304 Meadowlark Road near Chapin and found David Kent Cannon, 50, apparently dead with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said. The Lexington County Coroner's Office later pronounced Cannon dead. Investigators say an unknown suspect accosted Cannon in his home where he was fatally shot sometime between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Investigators also say the murder was not a random act and they believe there is a connection between Cannon and his assailant, Metts said. Anyone with information about the …

Chapin Woman Killed in Single-Car Wreck

Crash happened Friday on Dreher Island Road

A Chapin woman died in a single-car accident Friday afternoon, authorities said. Margaret B. Fulcher, 70, of Chapin, was driving a 2001 Lexus in the 1300 block of Dreher Island Road in Chapin when she ran off the right hand side of the road and overcorrected. She then ran off the left side of the road and struck a utility pole and a large tree, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. The accident occurred at 12;45 p.m. According to Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman, Fulcher was transported to Lexington Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:55 PM.   The accident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Two Arrested on Child Abuse Charges, Two-Month-Old Hospitalized

Child stable after receiving medical treatment for fractured ribs and brain trauma

An 18-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were arrested on Friday in connection with the physical abuse of a 2-month-old girl, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Tameeka Shanae Wallace, 18, and Benson Edem Essien, 21, turned themselves in to authorities on Friday morning and were charged with unlawful conduct towards a child by a legal custodian. The home address of Wallace or Essien, or their relationship with the 2-month-old girl will not be released in order to protect the girl’s identity, Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said. The 2-month-old, who is in stable condition at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, has received medical treatment for fractured ribs and brain trauma since Oct. 7, he said. A physician…

Occupy Wall Street Spreads to South Carolina

The demonstration in New York's financial district is spreading nationwide.

As the Occupy Wall Street movement continues to gain momentum in New York City, activists nationwide are working to organize similar demonstrations across the country, even in South Carolina. For almost three weeks now, protesters have gathered at Zucotti Park in Manhattan's financial district and the movement isn't showing any signs of slowing. Protesters began gathering on Sept. 17 and the group has grown day by day, despite the approximately 700 arrests made by police on the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday. Protesters are mainly gathered to demonstrate outrage over the growing disparity in wealth from the nation's richest one percent and everyone else. Marijuana Seized From Woods Near Chapin

Lexington County Sheriff's Department searching for the person or persons who grew seven marijuana plants behind unoccupied home

The Lexington County Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) is seeking the public’s help in identifying the person or persons who were growing marijuana in woods near an unoccupied home off Wessinger Road near Chapin. The seven marijuana plants, which NET officers seized on Sept. 19 after an officer recieved a tip, ranged in height from 5 feet to 7 feet tall and have a street value of about $7,000, according to a press release issued on Tuesday by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Officers with the narcotics team have no evidence that the owner of the unoccupied home knew that the marijuana plants were growing in black planting containers in the woods behind the home, Lexington County Sheriff James R. Update: No Delays Expected Tuesday for Dutch Fork High

All Monday evening activities at Dutch Fork High School have been canceled, including Interim Pick Up.

Update (6 p.m.): Dutch Fork High School is expected to operate as normal Tuesday after a bomb threat caused students and staff to evacuate the campus Monday afternoon. Buddy Price, director of community services, said the school district was still waiting Monday evening for the entire school to be cleared, but the district doesn't expect any delays for the school on Tuesday. "We're still waiting on the sheriff's department to get back in the building, but we don't expect that to carry on until tomorrow," Price said. "We expect it to be a regular school day."
