Irmo High's Justin McKie has been named the Gatorade South Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year, the organization announced Thursday. McKie, a 6-foot-4 guard, is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. McKie scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in the Yellow Jackets' 65-46 win over Goose Creek in the Class 4 A state championship game. Irmo finished the season with a 29-0 record. Mayor Hardy King gave official proclamations to the Dutch Fork High girls’ and Irmo High boys’ basketball teams for winning the state title games.
Lexington-Richland District 5’s state championship basketball teams received proclamations and honors Wednesday, during a Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce event. Irmo Mayor Hardy King gave official proclamations to the Dutch Fork High girls’ and Irmo High boys’ teams. The accolades keep coming for one of Dutch Fork High's Lady Foxes. Alaina Coates, a 6-foot-4 center and McDonald's All-American, has been named the 2012-2013 Gatorade South Carolina Basketball Player of the Year, the organization announced Thursday. Coates is the first player from Dutch Fork to be chosen for the award, according to a news release. She is now a finalist for the national Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year award. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. The Yellow Jackets take home a win tonight against Goose Creek in the state final.
Once Irmo High scored its first four points of their game against the Goose Creek Gators, it was no looking back for the Yellow Jackets. Irmo maintained control of the rest of the game leading to the team's second victory in three years. The Yellow Jackets defeated Goose Creek, 65-46, to become the Class 4A State Champions Irmo joined the Dutch Fork Lady Foxes in taking home the state title Friday night. The Gators, ranked No. 10 in the state, scored the first three points of the game. Seniors Justin McKie and Detrek Browning helped Irmo score and take the lead — one the Yellow Jackets never let go of. At the half, Irmo was leading 28-14. The Gators continued to struggle and by the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets were up 18 points. …

COLUMBIA — Dutch Fork High's girls basketball team are back to back state champions with their win over Dorman Friday night at the Colonial Life Arena. The top ranked Lady Foxes defeated the Cavaliers 46-43, to claim the Class 4A state title. "I’m just happy for them that they finished it out well," Coach Faye Norris said. "I wanted it for them so bad." For the first few minutes of the game, the two squads were within one or two points each other before Dutch Fork took the lead. The first quarter was plagued with turnovers and missed shots but by halftime, Dutch Fork was leading 25-19. The second half was proving to be a test for the Silver Foxes. The Lady Foxes will play Dorman High at 7 p.m. Friday at the Colonial Life Arena.
The Dutch Fork High Lady Foxes are focused on ending the season with another state title. The defending state champions — the state's top ranked girls team — are up against Dorman High for the Class 4A state title after defeating Aiken, 40-24, in the Lower State Championship at the Florence Civic Center last Friday. Dutch Fork (28-0) is looking to wrap up its season undefeated — leaving a legacy for those players that will continue on as Silver Foxes.
