3 Ways to Help Oklahoma Tornado Victims

People across the country are wondering what they can do to help.

After a devatasting tornado struck the town of Moore, OK, on Monday, many Midlands residents are asking what they can do to help. First, you can text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10, according to this NBC report.  You can also text STORM to 80888 to donate $10 to the Salvation Army relief efforts.  The Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief is taking donations online and via phone. Deputies Search for Kidnapping, Laptop Theft Suspects

A man was assaulted and kidnapped at a Broad River Road business Monday night.

Richland County deputies are looking for two men who assaulted another man, tied him up and forced him to tell them where computers were stored. The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Monday at a business at 3005 Broad River Road, which is near St. Andrews Road, said Curtis Wilson, spokesperson for the Richland County Sheriff's Department. The men took three laptops and some tablets, Wilson said. They also took some of the victim's personal items. The two men will be charged with burglary, kidnapping and aggravated assalut, Wilson said. Anyone with information about the incident should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Live: Investigators Found No Evidence Capnerhurst Owned Gun

Brett Parker, an Irmo man on trial for double murder, owed $175,000 to a former Midlands bookie, according to testimony in day eight of the trial.  Lanny Ray Gunter, a man in serving time in federal prison after pleading guilty to a gambling charge, testified that Brett Parker owed him $175,00, according to WIS. Parker was paying off the debt by $5,000 or $10,000 a month. Family and friends of Bryan Capnerhurst, who was found shot dead along with Brett Parker's wife in the Parkers' Ascot Estates home in April 2012, also testified Monday, according to The State. They all said Capnerhurst never owned a gun or talked about guns. Brett Parker's attorneys say Capnerhurst shot Tammy Parker, and Brett Parker then acted in self-defense when he …

I agree! Why was BC never investigated? His coworkers testified about how hardworking BC was yet also testified that he conducted gambling at work. When he went to Parker house he had called in sick that day to conduct more illegal business. Great use of taxpayer dollars.   more ›

The seven soldiers who died in combat from South Carolina were honored in Columbia on Monday at the Fallen Soldiers Ceremony. The annual event, held at the Palmetto Club in Columbia, recognizes those South Carolina service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the past year. Dutch Fork High Student to Intern at Harvard

Junior Daniel Ott will intern at Harvard University's cancer research center for the summer.

A Lexington-Richland School District Five Biomedical Science student has received a highly competitive internship at Harvard University for the summer in the school’s cancer research center.  Daniel Ott will participate in the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) program at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. He is a junior at Dutch Fork High School and studies Biomedical Science at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies (The Center).  “Daniel’s internship epitomizes the result of the collaboration between Dutch Fork and the Center’s Biomedical Science program,” said Julie Krusen, a Biomedical Science teacher at The Center. “We’re excited about this opportunity for Daniel and look forward to his work in the future.”  …

SC First Gentleman Back Home for Two Weeks Leave

Gov. Haley's husband Michael was deployed in January.

Governor Nikki Haley's husband Michael has returned home for two weeks of leave from his deployment in Afghanistan, the governor's office said on Monday. The First Gentleman was deployed on January 10 for a tour of 11 months and his leave was granted by his commanding officers. Two weeks is a customary amount of time for leave  for a soldier in Haley's position. As a result of her husband's return, the governor cleared her public schedule for the week, including a scheduled speech in Mount Pleasant on Monday morning.

Speak Out: Is the State Plane Worth the Trouble?

Latest controversy has legislators split.

Last week the state airplane became a source of controversy yet again.  Democrats accused Gov. Nikki Haley of misusing the state plane and the governor's staff provided documentation that she had not. The Democrats countered by saying that even if the governor had not violated the letter of the law, she had violated it in spirit. The state senate then spent much of an afternoon debating whether or not the Budget Control Board should look into simply selling the planes. As has been noted before, just about any part of the state can be reached in a few hours by car and the state could always charter a plane when it was absolutely necessary. Selling the two planes the state owns would probably net the state a significant windfall. The two …

JoSCh, are we actually among the lowest taxed in SC? I know the property taxes are low for homeowners, but it seems to me the income tax rates are reasonably high, at least they are higher than the last state I lived in (VA).
