District 5 End-of-Course Exam Scores Among Top in State

The state's End-of-Course Examination Program includes tests in biology, English, algebra and U.S. history.

Release from Lexington-Richland 5

Lexington-Richland School District Five’s latest End-Of-Course Examination scores were among the top in the Midlands and state, according to new results released Oct. 1. The state’s End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) includes tests in biology, English, algebra and U.S. history. The exam counts as 20 percent of a student’s final course grade.

Statewide, District Five had the sixth highest percentage of students passing the biology exam, the fourth highest percentage of students passing English, the tenth highest percentage of students passing algebra/mathematics and the twelfth highest percentage of students passing the U.S. history exam. Of the Midlands districts, District Five had the highest mean scale score in biology, English and algebra and the second highest mean score on the U.S. history exam.

District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “These EOCEP scores mirror other results that show the quality of education and laser focus on instruction we have at District Five. We will continue to work toward high achievement in all subject areas for all students.”

Several test scores and other predictors on academic performance are released each fall, the latest being the state’s Oct. 1 release of EOCEP results. Last week’s SAT results showed that District Five leads the state in the percentage of students who took the SAT examination and has the third highest composite scores among all districts in South Carolina.  Data released in August also showed that District Five’s Classes of 2013 had an ACT average composite score of 22.1, which is 1.7 points above the state average of 20.4 and 1.2 points above the national average of 20.9. The district had the third highest composite ACT score in the state.

Eleven students from District Five have been named semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program, and the district has maintained its “A” rating under the current federal accountability system.
