3 District Five Students Named National Achievement Semifinalists

Semifinalists now advance to compete for the approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards that will be offered next spring.

Three African-American students from Lexington-Richland School District Five have been named semifinalists in the 50th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. 

Chapin High student Jame' I. Adamson, Dutch Fork High student Evan A. Pinson, and Irmo High student Jason L. Graham are among the 1,600 students that have been designated National Achievement Semifinalists. The scholarship program recognizes academically promising African-American students and provides scholarships to the most outstanding program participants.

Semifinalists now advance to compete for the approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards that will be offered next spring. Each winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship award.

Chapin High Principal Dr. Akil Ross said, “The Eagle family is so proud of Jame' and her accomplishments as a National Achievement Semifinalist.  Jame's hard work inside and outside the classroom is a testimony to her ability to maximize her potential.”

Dutch Fork High Principal Dr. Greg Owings said, “We are certainly proud of Evan. Evan represents the best of what we hope for in our young people. I know that he will continue to make significant contributions to Dutch Fork.”

Irmo High School Principal David Riegel said, “Jason is a confident, engaging young man with an infectious smile.  His success is not a surprise to anyone who knows him, and we could not be more proud of him. He is an example of the best District Five has to offer.” 

The National Achievement Program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a nonprofit organization that operates without government assistance. Scholarship criteria include a record of consistently high academic performance and potential for academic success in college along with other measures. Nearly 32,700 students have been awarded Achievement Scholarship awards since the program was established in 1964.
