DeMint Called Out by Rick Perry on Eve of Texas Senate Vote

Voters go to polls today for the hotly contested Texas Senate race.

When Rick Perry was running for president he made nice with South Carolina's junior Senator Jim DeMint, even .

But that was a long time ago. The Texas governor sharply criticized DeMint on the eve of a primary for US Senator. Perry's lieutenant governor, David Dewhurst has been locked in a battle with Ted Cruz for the right to be the GOP nominee in the race to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Cruz has raised millions of dollars from outside the Lone Star State in his pursuit of the office, including $2 million from DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund. Several high-profile politicians have come to Texas and campaigned on Cruz's behalf, including DeMint, Rick Santorum and Sarah Palin.

While at a phone bank calling voters for Dewhurst, Perry lashed out at DeMint and his supporters, saying that they were having an undue impact on the race and that DeMint's backers were trying to help him replace Texas' John Cornyn as the Majority Whip

"I don’t think anybody knows David Dewhurst any better than I do. And when we talk about what’s going to be best for Texas, is a senator from South Carolina going to be better for Texas than John Cornyn?" Perry said.

Cruz and Dewhurst were the top two finishers in a June primary, with Dewhurst finishing 10 points ahead. But since then, Cruz has surged, due in large part to a concerted effort by DeMint, who has flooded his supporters' e-mail accounts with pleas to donate to Cruz's campaign. Polls show Cruz with a solid lead heading into election day.

DeMint has earned a reputation as a kingmaker of sorts among more conservative Republicans in the past few years. He was instrumental in raising millions that helped several Tea Party candidates win office in 2010, including Rand Paul in Kentucky, Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania and Mike Lee in Utah.

I don't care for Perry nor Demint, saying this, it amazes me that an outsider/out side of state politics can have so much influence on a states election...Who would be more familiar with the needs of the constituents than somone that deals with the day to day activity...

Wouldn't it be hilarous if Texans woke up to find they voted for the Democratic candidate to replace KBH?
Jason A. Trommetter July 31, 2012 at 06:12 pm
KBH is a RINO. Electing a Democrat wouldn't make things any worse for TX.

DeMint is looking for like-minded legislators to join him in the Senate. He has every right to endorse a candidate in the TX election.

I hate outsiders influencing campaigns. No different there than all the outside-of-SC $$$ supporting Haley and look what we got. Somebody supporting Savannah's port expansion instead of our own.

I don't see anything wrong with learning CPR, or lifesaving (swimming), or courses on nutrition andRead More child-raising. Lots of courses are good things. What I don't think is a good thing, is having state legislators passing bills on this level of detail. State legislatures get very political, and then want to legislate things like creationism (intelligent design) or ban the science behind evolution. Political hacks should not be determining the school curriculum, they are not actually the most knowledgeable people with respect to academics. They are politicians; that does not make them experts on anything in particular except winning elections.

As long as they put a clause in you can't be sued if the person dies. Or you break the person's rib.Read More Or you injure the person in a certain way. Or the student is not high on drugs, or booze.

I don't think Google does much in the way of religious doodles -- Passover, Ramadan, etc. so why theRead More flack? The Chavez holiday coincided with Easter, but I suspect that those who are complaining would have found another reason to criticize Google if the Chavez birthday had fallen on a day other than Easter and the company had run the doodle.

When I was in 8th grade, April Fools Day happened to land on the day I came back from the beach withRead More my friends after spring break. I got this REALLY good fake belly button ring to freak out my dad. Well, he took one look at it--completely unaware it was fake--and pulled it out. Needless to say, I never got anything pierced for real.

I am completely familiar with state owned aircraft and how they are to be used. This was aRead More completely legitimate use of the state aircraft, there is simply no real argument against its use. Only those who support the socialized medicine represented by Obamacare or a wide variety of curmudgeons think that this government witness should have been privately funded.

Kat, this is just pathetic. You disagree with nullification (and therefore support the PPACA) butRead More can't rationally debate the merits, so you latch on to this ridiculous argument. The legislature is in the business of making laws. There are expenses in that business. In my perfect world, there wouldn't be a legislature, but in this world there is and they need to have expert input into their process or else they will just be flying blind, and we've seen how badly that turns out.

Excuse me there 'teabag party' head. While you're right about he should pay you'd better look in theRead More mirror son. You got two wars you cheered on, quickly abandoning why we even sent our military into that region, Absolutely Free and actually worse as not a dime has been paid for that credit card debt principle yet. But more important you haven't paid anything as to the results of and the greater majorities responsibility the VA and veterans of, DeJa-Vu all over again, a decade plus added to the previous decades and wars of!!!!!
