Arts advocates celebrate override, go back to work.
The S.C. House and Senate overturned Gov. Nikki Haley’s arts vetoes, returning more than $2 million back to the South Carolina Arts Commission. Lawmakers this week overrode Vetoes 1 and 21, which cut $1.9 million and $500,000 to the commission, respectively. Arts advocates across the state celebrated. “It’s really wonderful these legislators see the ABC Project’s benefits to students,” said Christine Fisher, director of the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project. “We’re just really excited.” Fisher added that with the vetoes overturned, she can now continue her project’s assistance to schools. “We’ll be able to continue in schools and to give them assistance and one-on-one help,” she said. “We really appreciate the support.” The ABC Project is a…

Protest occurs on eve of legislative gathering to vote on vetoes.
Hundreds of people danced and sang between the raindrops on the steps and in front of the State House on Monday evening, protesting Gov. Nikki Haley’s budget veto that closed the South Carolina Arts Commission. The gathering was organized by the “Occupy” movement and featured what one would expect from a protest in support of Arts funding—an abundance of singing and dancing and plenty of creativity with signage. The closing of the Arts Commission was one of the items to get the most attention in Haley’s 81 vetoes of the legislature’s 2012-2013 budget. In her notes to accompany the veto, Haley said the commission is burdened with high administrative costs and added that she believed funding of the arts be returned to taxpayers, who can …

The state's arts community remains active and hopeful in push for veto overrides.
Arts supporters and advocacy agencies across the state have turned to social media networks to promote interest and garner support in opposing Gov. Nikki Haley’s S.C. Arts Commission vetoes. Advocates are using Facebook and Twitter to create “talking points," to call for action in contacting state legislatures — and even to organize protests. Natalie Brown, owner, director and principal performer of Alternacirque, organized a rally — to be held at the State House at 6 p.m. Monday – by simply creating a Facebook group. “I was seeing a lot of chatter on Facebook right when it happened,” she said of Haley’s veto announcement. “So a lot of us decided we needed to do some sort of event at the State House.” “I started a Facebook invite and from…

Arts Commission "predominantly funds" arts education programs throughout the state
When Gov. Nikki Haley vetoed $1.9 million in funding allocated to the South Carolina Arts Commission, along with an additional $500,000 in funding for grants on July 5, she said she was not cutting the arts, but rather the commission. On Facebook, she reiterated: “We vetoed the Arts Commission, not the arts. This does not defund arts education.” But many advocates say that without the SCAC, which is responsible for issuing competitive grants and overseeing the state’s art collection, arts programs across the state, including educational ones, will be in peril or ruin. Christine Fisher, director of Arts in Basic Curriculum Project, an educational arts program dedicated to providing and enriching arts programs in schools from pre-school to …

The S.C. Arts Commission has closed, pending moves by the state legislature next week to override Gov. Nikki Haley's vetoes.
Democratic lawmakers voiced their opposition Monday to Gov. Nikki Haley’s recent budget vetoes in a Monday press conference under a blistering sun in the parking lot of the S.C. Arts Commission. The commission is closed until further legislative action, as Haley’s vetoes cut $1.9 million in state level funding and $500,000 in funding earmarked for grants. Haley said on Friday that the agency is redundant, as it can receive private funds and can apply for funding through grants. The 20-person SCAC staff waits in limbo, unable to work, until legislators convene next week. Ken May, executive director of SCAC, said he waits in limbo and cannot pay his staff until the vetoes are overruled. May said that he fully anticipated being cut, as the …
