Poll: Most Americans Like Voter IDs

73 percent think voter ID before voting is not discriminatory.

A poll released today shows most Americans favor showing an ID before voting, because they believe voter fraud is a substantial problem.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 64 percent of Likely U.S. Voters rate voter fraud at least a somewhat serious problem in the United States today, and just 24 percent disagree. This includes 35 percent who consider it a very serious problem and 7 percent who view it as not at all serious. Twelve percent are undecided, according to Rasmussen.

The voter ID issue has been a hot-button topic in South Carolina, which has vowed to fight for a voter ID requirement after the U.S. Department of Justice struck down the state's law mandating IDs at the polls.

Opponents say voter ID surpress votes among elderly and poor voters. Proponenets say dead voters have turned up on election rolls and cast ballots.

Earlier this month, the District of Columbia Board of Elections opened an investigation after an activist proponent of voter IDs obtained a ballot using U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's identity. Holder and the Justice Department have blocked voter ID efforts, such as South Carolina's.

The Rasmussen survey, released Monday, was conducted April 12 to April 13 and surveyed 1,000 likely voters.

That coming from Rasmussen, the guy who first entered the field as a commentator on Fox News and contributor to World Net (NUT) Daily, that poll has no scientific foundation. Watch regular network news (NBC, CBS, ABC, etc.) and not one of those networks take anything from Rasmussen, because they know his polls are illegitimate. And when it comes to ID - there are very many states that call for ID, but that still recognize a citizen's right to vote. Like Rhode Island, for instance, which many Republicans are using in their argument. In that state, though, you can show any type of ID - your Medicare card, for example, or your student ID. And even if you have no ID, you can still vote - the poll staff can immediately compare your signature to the one you have on file from when you first registered to vote; if they match, your vote goes in. That's not what we have here in SC, though - where not only are they trying to refuse voters who don't have the one type of ID they'll take, but the state is also refusing to give IDs (even renewing them), and only from particular people in particular regions.

@reg: "...here in SC...they trying to refuse voters who don't have the one type of ID they'll take...also refusing to give IDs (even renewing them), and only from particular people in particular regions."

ALEX (American Legislative Exchange Council)/KB(koch bros) bought SC legislators...and SC citizens bought the KBs bs hook, line and sinker...there is as much need for voterIDs as for tits on a boar hog (as my daddy said about useless nonsense)...

all the time/energy/money spent on the KB nonsense would be...would have been...better spent on educating election officials and ensuring they do their jobs...eg, ensuring voter registration lists current.

but we have been around the voterID bush on PATCH many times...would/could PATCH (Lindsay maybe) provide links to the bush.

caveat: i dont know, but have strong feeling, SC GOPs (fed and state) have taken KB contributions...would be interesting to have the facts...

@SDR: " I appreciate the state protecting my vote...

your vote has always been protected...has anyone tried to vote using your name...it's impossible if election officials do their job...

corrupt election officials are the problem, if there is one.

perhaps, if you were so moved, you can explain how you proceed to committee voter fraud...

Stanley lets get together and design a fingerprint voting system that can be verified nationally. Not only would it help law enforcement track criminals, but it would prevent election officials so called mistakes and or fraud. I guess you could alway drag a dead person to the booth or just their finger print to cheat if you wanted to. This attack on voters is insanity just like the entire Repubilcan policies that have caused more harm, hatred and division to this country and its people than any terrorist could of hoped for. I hope some day people in South Carolina realize the problem isn't the middle class and the worker the problem is the plutocrats invading our legistion house.

Wounded Warrior: "Is popular vote wrong??

certainly not...voterID laws discourage the popular vote...

re: lets get together and design a fingerprint voting system that can be verified nationally [mimi say]

a similar idea 'REAL ID Act' (a GOP idea) was enacted 2005...As of October 2009, 25 states (including SC) have approved either resolutions or binding legislation not to participate in the program...

irony of irony now SC wants a voterID...had they enforced the REAL ID Act all would have a voterID...

why after BO was elected did SC believe a voterID was required...what can be more painfully obvious than 'BO voter suppression' is the motivation for voterID laws...legislators have sold the popular vote to the koch boys...and thanks to the BO haters it was an easy sell...
