Locals Among USC Scholars

Three graduates from District 5 schools named Carolina Scholars.

Three graduates are among 20 recipients of the Carolina Scholar award, the University of South Carolina's most prestigious honor for incoming, in-state freshmen, the school announced Monday.  

The Carolina Scholars are: 

  • Riley Chambers, a graduate of . He is the son of Angela and Tom Chambers of Columbia.  
  • Justin Moore, a graduate of . He is the son of Shun Mun Wong-Moore and Philip Moore of Irmo.
  • Austin Williams, a graduate of . He is the son of Debbie and Eddie Williams of Irmo.

More than 2,200 students applied for the Carolina and McNair Scholars awards, making it the largest and most competitive applicant pool in the university’s history, according to a release Monday.

“The Carolina Scholar award is the flagship scholarship at the state’s flagship university, and the companion McNair Scholar award is nationally competitive, each attracting the best and brightest students from our state, region and nation,” Scott Verzyl, USC’s associate vice president for enrollment management and director of undergraduate admissions, said in the release. 

The Carolina Scholarship is valued at $10,000 per year for four years.
